Building a website to help tackle cancer

Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer (TYAC) are a specialist network of professionals who treat and care for teenagers and young adults with cancer.

The charity wanted a website redesign that represented their beneficiaries. They had identified that the user experience (UX) and functionality on their old website wasn’t where it needed to be, to fully engage with their audience and optimise donations.

Having worked with Adept on the design of their #fundtheanswers fundraising identity, TYAC had insight into our work and were confident in our ability to interpret their strategy and cause into the design and development of a new website.

How we helped

Our experienced team of designers wanted to take the website in a completely new direction, taking it from having a very medical-based feel, to one that is far more reflective of the teenagers and young adults who the site supports.

We used our knowledge of charity website design to implement best practice on the new site, with a view to increasing the conversion rates for donations and event participation – aligning with TYAC’s digital strategy.

The breadth and depth of information related to cancer could easily be overwhelming, from types of cancer, symptoms and diagnosis, to the impact on day-to-day life, treatment and recovery. We are extremely proud to have helped create an easy to navigate ‘support’ section to help young people and their families access information and support easily.

We optimised the donation process as this was an area of the website that TYAC wanted to improve. Throughout the website there are clear donation prompts as well as an effective ‘donate’ landing page. One-off donations are processed via JustGiving and regular donations are processed through integration with GoCardless.

Sadly, so many people are impacted by cancer every year, and we know they are likely to want to support the charity, so we created an easy to navigate and engaging ‘get involved’ section using the Unicity events listing system. This allows the charity to highlight key events and clearly shows all challenge events, to encourage readers to sign up and take part.

TYAC produce a range of materials and resources that are specific to healthcare professionals, so this was an audience we wanted to accommodate effectively on the new website. Healthcare professionals can log in to the website to see specific content that’s relevant to them, to aid the journey for parents, teenagers and young adults affected by cancer.

Result

We are incredibly proud of this project. The TYAC website very clearly represents their beneficiaries, with a user interface (UI) that is clean and easy to navigate, encourages visitors to donate, and resulted in a very happy client!
